The capital of Australia and its political heart, Canberra truly deserves the title in every aspect. Located in the northern part of the Australian Capital Territory, the federal capital of Australia houses the national parliament, federal government departments, the High Court of Australia, the Australian War Memorial, and several other important institutions. When Australia's separate colonies were federated in 1901 and became states, a decision to build a national capital was written in the constitution. In 1908 the site was selected, diplomatically situated between arch rivals Sydney and Melbourne. American architect Walter Burley Griffin filed a petition to design the capital city. The city was officially baptized as 'Canberra' in 1913, meaning 'meeting place' in the aboriginal language. To visit this majestical place, join us on Travel to Canberra.
